Description
Lieutenant Carlyle - Second Lieutenant Robert Carlyle of the 1/5th King's Own Scottish Borderers, killed in action at the Dardanelles was the elder son of Mr T. R. Carlyle, Waterbeck. The deceased officer was a young man of twenty-two years of age and his death will be deeply regretted both in the district where his family resided and amongst a wide circle of friends. He was educated at St Mary's School, Melrose, where he was dux of the school and head of the sports in 1907. He afterwards went to Edinburgh Academy, where he was a member of the School Championship Football Team of 1910-11. He gained a good reputation as a half-back, and played in the 1912 trial match for International honours. After leaving school, he served a year each in Bradford and Dalry gaining experience in the wool trade with a view of taking charge of that branch of the firm's interests. He gave promise of having a successful career in business. He joined the 1/5th K.O.S. Borderers after the start of the war as a private and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant when the battalion on mobilisation moved from Dumfries to Tillicoultry. He was of a most amiable disposition and as an officer was a great favourite amongst the men of the battalion.
