Description
LMS Tender numbers from 17550 to 17628 were built between 1899 and 1900 as class 812 0-6-0 locomotives at St Rolux and operated on the Glasgow and South Western Railway, as well as the Caledonian Railway.
One locomotive in this series is still operating on the Strathspey Railway (LMS 17556) and was the last train to take a railway 'special' to the Isle of Whithorn before the tracks were lifted, after closure of the branch, as BR 57566.
A registered user of this site has told us this same locomotive, 17556, is in this photograph of the Dumfries shed in its early LMS livery so the photo must be after 1923 but prior to the renumbering of all LMS locomotives in 1932. 17XXX was the LMS way of identifying the locomotive as coming from its Scottish subsidiaries.
