The inscription reads " This Box was the property of the late Patrick Miller [Millar] Esqr. of DALSWINTON. The first practical Adaptor of Steam to Navigation in Octr. 1788 AND WAS PRESENTED AFTER HIS DEATH To Mr. Robert Bryson Watch Maker in Edinr. [Edinburgh] As a mark of Regard for his Merit and Integrity by me the Eldest Son and Representative of the DECEASED Patrick Miller [Millar] EDINBURGH AD1816."
